Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?
I'm sure that many of you have heard of this famous Broderbund game.
Like Carmen Sandiego, you probably wonder where I have been the last few days. After turning out an update to this column every day for most of July the pace has suddenly dropped off.
Well, I have good news. I haven't gone into hiding. Over the past week I have been busy customizing portions of the Longears Mall to bring you more functionality. That takes quite a bit of computer programming.
You may remember from my July 2 article that I selected a really nice classifieds software package as the basis for maintaining Longears Mall listings. As typically is true in the computer field, practically no software does 100% of what a purchaser wants out-of-the-box. It usually requires some custom programming.
At present we have 722 store listings and 228 classified listings. As you can see, by adding support for stores and their listings we have taken the classifieds software way beyond what the vendor originally designed the software to do. Stores add a richness that classified listings alone just don't provide. Besides it's fun to just browse, isn't it.
There is still more to be done. Over the next two weeks most of my focus will be on completing some of those parts. During that time I will be updating this column every few days.
I would like to take a moment to thank each of you for the many emails of encouragement and support that you have sent to firstname.lastname@example.org They inspire me to help make LongearsMall.com what it is.
Have a great day!
