Peek-a-boo! Where Are You?

Does it ever seem like your critters are making up games to play with you?

My donkeys certainly have a good sense of humor, and are also very smart. This last summer I got some really great pictures of my donkeys playing "Peek-a-boo" with me. Andy discovered that he could look through the window in the back of his stall, and see what we were doing in the yard. Soon his buddies learned that they could see interesting things through that window, too.

It was like a window into a new world full of fascinating things! They could watch their human friends coming and going from the house. They could hear their friends talking and doing things in the house. They could watch the kids playing in the back yard. And sometimes if they were patient enough, those people would even come over and feed them tasty treats of fresh grass blades, apple pieces, or some other wonderful delicacy! What a great discovery!

Elsie is my little gray standard jennet (all the others are mammoths). Even though Elsie is smaller than everyone else, she wants very badly to be the herd leader, but has only succeeded in making it to second in command to my bigger boss jennet, Smokey. Elsie is very smart though, and alert to what is going on around her. She soon learned that when feeding time came, she could watch out the window in the back of the barn, and see when I was coming to feed them.

When I opened the door to the house and walked across the yard to the barn, Elsie would watch me intently, fairly vibrating with anticipation, until she couldn't see me anymore through the window. Then she'd go running around the corner to the pasture gate to wait for me to come around the barn and feed her. Smart donkey! I always got a good laugh out of seeing how intently she was watching me!

Things are still drying out from our big rain storm last week, but I'm hoping soon it will be dry enough for me to spend some more time playing with my donkeys. They sure love all the attention I can give them.

But until then I'll just have to write about more of my donkey adventures!

Have a great day!

Nice shots! Aren't they smart? I'm always amazed at what they learn all by themselves
