Treat of the Week - Watermelon Wonder

Sometimes it's nice to just have a simple juicy sweet treat. Here's one that is perfect for this summer weather and one your longeared buddies will love!

I think every one of my donkeys absolutely loves watermelon. Usually when we have watermelon to eat in the summer time, we will give the fresh rinds to the donkeys. They chomp them right down.

Something else fun to do is to take a whole watermelon and cut just the very end off so that they can smell the sweet juicy inside but have to work a little bit harder to get to it. Then give it to your longears and see what they do. It can be very entertaining to watch them try to figure out how to eat such a big piece.

Here are some photos of my donkeys enjoying their watermelon treats!

Elsie is wasting no time in eating her watermelon. She has to hurry before someone else comes along and takes it.

Here Lily and Pansy are sharing a big slice of watermelon rind.

I like to call this one my "Hoover Donkey". Look at that mouth! It looks like Lily is about ready to just slurp up that juicy slice of watermelon in one big gulp!

Next time you have extra watermelon, try giving some to your donkeys or mules and see what they do. I bet they'll love it!

Just make sure the watermelon is fresh and still good. You don't want to feed your longears anything that is old or spoiled that would make them sick. But they will love fresh watermelon treats!

Gaming for Donkeys

One of my favorite parts of showing my donkeys at Bishop Mule Days is the gaming classes.

Some donkeys may not be very fast, in fact I don't think any of them are as fast as the gaming horses, but they can still compete in these classes and have a great time. In fact, I think that the gaming classes (Polebending, Barrel Racing, Keyhole, etc) are some of the best classes to start in with donkeys who are just starting their riding career. They can go through the course pattern at whatever speed is best for them, and still be a success. It's not like Western Pleasure where they have to jog until told otherwise, and lope until told otherwise.

This year at Bishop Mule Days, both of my show donkeys, Andy and Lily, competed in the gaming classes. Here are a couple photos from those events.

Next time you get a chance, you ought to try some of these classes with your donkeys. They are a lot of fun, even for beginners!

I'm Back!

You have probably been wondering where I disappeared.

Well, we're back from our two big shows this year - Bishop Mule Days and Montana Mule Days. We had a great time, and enjoyed seeing quite a few of you at the shows as well!

Bishop Mule Days was again a highlight of our year! We've been working hard all year getting ready for this show season. Lily and Andy did very well at the show. Here are a few photos of them in several of the driving events at Bishop.
