Waiting For Babies

Springtime is an exciting time of year, and somewhat stressful too, waiting for those babies to finally arrive!

KristieJorgensen.jpg Do you have any baby donkeys or mules on the way this year? We'd love to see pictures of them when they come, and share them with all of the Longears Mall visitors! Send us an email with a photo and a short description or story about your new young one, and we'll post it here so that everyone can share in your excitement!

For those of you who don't have any babies of your own coming this year, you can still join in the fun by visiting the donkey webcams listed on our WebCams menu above! If you have a donkey or mule webcam (or know of one) that's not listed there yet, please let us know, and we'll add it.

Well, while you're in the mood to watch for new babies, you might enjoy helping me watch my jennet, Daisy. I don't know exactly when she is due - when I bought her, I was told some time in April or May. She's getting pretty wide in the belly now, but hasn't gotten serious about udder development yet, so we've probably got at least a little bit longer to go.

Click here to visit Daisy's webcam. You can't really see much at night (her pen is too dark), but during the day you can watch her going about her duties of eating, sleeping and standing in the shade.

Daisy's baby sure is an active one. About 7 weeks ago, I was standing out there talking to her for a while after I put her hay in the feeder, and I thought I saw the baby kick a couple times - sort of a little bump, bump on Daisy's side.

Yesterday morning that baby must have been feeling lively again (and I had more time than most mornings to stand out there and watch Daisy). I can definitely tell the foal has grown. Poor Daisy!!! She was just trying to eat her breakfast, but it looked like there was an earthquake going on in her tummy! Bounce, Bounce, Bounce! And then the baby would sit still for a few minutes, and then Bounce, Bounce, Bounce again! Poor girl will probably be happy to have that rascal out! ... as if it isn't bad enough being a mile wide!

So do you think it will be a jack or a jennet foal? Seems like I've heard that the jacks tend to be more lively in utero. My last bred jennet's baby was a girl, and I never remember seeing it kick around inside of her. But Daisy's baby sure is a wiggly thing. I guess we'll see, huh?
